Topic: Newton's First Law
I got to teach about something that I find so interesting, Newton’s first law of motion. The law basically is saying that an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by another force. I had a few technical difficulties, but I was supposed to start off with a video of a man pulling a tablecloth out from under a set table without moving the table setting. Then, I had a powerpoint with information about Issac Newton, the fully written first law of motion, an analysis of the first law of motion (I broke it down so they would understand it), a slide showing some examples of outside forces, and I introduced the concept of inertia. After the powerpoint, the students performed a lab in which they had a beaker, a penny, and a notecard. When they would slowly drag the notecard, the penny would stay on the notecard. But, when the student would flick the notecard, the penny would fall right into the glass. This was a representation of inertia, and how the penny wanted to stay in place.
